Hostile Terrain 94

In addition to panels, workshops and poster presentations, the conference is a space to highlight artistic work focusing on issues relating to border walls and borderlands. As part of the 2022 edition, we will host the Hostile Terrain 94 exhibit, organized by the Undocumented Migration Project and created and directed by anthropologist Jason De León.

The interactive exhibit comprises of handwritten tags, each representing one migrant deceased in the Sonoran Desert in Arizona, while trying to cross into the United States between the mid-1990s and 2019. Tags are then geolocated on a map, to show the location where migrants’ remains were found.

Participants to the conference will have the opportunity to fill a tag and participate in the completion of the map.

To allow Montrealers and visitors to fully experience the exhibit, we are happy to partner with the Maison du Développement Durable de Montréal. The exhibit will open at the MDD on Sept. 22, 2022 and run until Oct. 18, 2022. It will then be relocated to the conference venue, and will close on Oct. 21st, 2022.
